In places where you can get a JDM Supra, they go for pennies on the dollar to what they go for in the U.S.

A quick search on the interweb, will show that a good relitively clean USDM Supra can easily go for 40,000 USD yet, in Canda a twin turbo mk4 Supra can easily go for as low as 14,000 grand American. What is going to happen to these over priced USDM Supra’s? Will the USDM cars hold a premium over the JDM cars, will the JDM cars prices get inflated, or will they both even out? Here is the craziness !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (this was the first one I found and it might be a little modded but I’m sure if you looked you could find one mod free for a couple more thousand) what do you think will happen?

I don’t know anything about the car but are there any discernible differences between the USDM and JDM models?

The Supra is expensive here for cultural reasons. Because of F&F, it’s a ‘hero’ car, Kind of like K.I.T.T. from knight rider, or that obscure mid engine benz from the spyhunter games (though that never went on sale). What they cost elsewhere is irrelevent, and where you got yours once you have it here in the US is also irrelevent; “But that one came from Canada and it’s not worth that up there.” Will not win you a discount with a seller. They will not take your $14k over someone else’s $30k.

What might actually happen if Supra importing becomes a thing is people who have access to foreign Supras raising their prices relative to the US market to take advantage of the JZ80s popularity here. It won’t become a thing though, because all you get for importing is RHD. Domestic supras were every bit as good as their global counterparts. People import because the thing they wanted wasn’t available here at all, and that is not the case for the Supra. F&F is a tentpole francise now, and people who’ve seen the new one can netflix the first entry. New converts are being won over every day, and given that, the price of the Supra in the US is unlikely to deflate.

i feel like they will begin to even out in a few years once people here in the US realize its cheaper to import them from canada or japan than it is to find a clean US one

Well the JDM ones will be crushed for the next couple years.

Other than that I believe there were minor difference in the turbo (ceramic turbine vs steel) and obvious differences in emissions equipment. Maybe some small differences in suspension and brakes.

Power very similar, JDM makes slightly more torque Rear Diff ratio & no oil cooler Larger brakes were available for JDM’s as an option Suspension is stiffer on JDM’s Injectors are 440cc High Impedence on JDM There is no EGR on JDM’s MAP sensor not MAF on JDM ECU Different Single Turbo kits fit fine on JDM’s Fuel Tank is different on JDM’s Fuel pump is smaller on JDM’s DP flange is different on JDM’s Most JDM’s have cloth seats Theres more I have forgotten.......

considering K.I.T.T. era trans ams are going for pennies now-a-days i dont think its the movies that are keeping the prices so high, otherwise we’d be seeing a multitude of supra clone cars which the majority are not. the prices are inflated because clean ones are hard to come by now since they only sold about 11,300 of them between 93-98 verses triple that worldwide

now-a-days

Keywords, there. Knight Rider is no longer a popular franchise so, of course, the car it made a hero is no longer inflated in price. ‘Now-a-days’, F&F is multibillion dollar global franchise, and you will still need to bring $30k with you if you want a decent condition JZ80.

otherwise we’d be seeing a multitude of supra clone cars which the majority are not.

Cloning a car is more than just an engine swap with your friends and a couple of beers. A non-turbo JZ80 would reflect it’s build options in the VIN , an easily checkable thing. It’s also not a good idea to lie about a term of art - like for example, “This is a genuine JZ80 TT Supra”- to a seller who can easily run the VIN and find out.

the prices are inflated because clean ones are hard to come by now since they only sold about 11,300 of them between 93-98 verses triple that worldwide

Clean versions of every out-of-production car become harder to get as time goes on, but one of the only ones to retain it’s value is also tied to a popular movie franchise. It’s not a coincidence.

i really think it is, the people who actually have the money to buy these aren’t the same people who go see every F&F film. most of these cars have absolutely no ties to any of the films besides the stigma, hell do you even know how many of the films had supras in them? 3...3 out of the 7, the first two and the last one. hell tokyo drift didn’t even have one, and even if there was it was a background car. i think youre reading way to far into the whole movie adds value premise. The S2000 was featured in those first two movies but you dont see their prices wildly inflated. or the charger, you can buy 67’ chargers all day every day from a whole wide range of price points even though its forever tied to the movies as doms charger.

TL;DR Supras are inflated cause they are in short supply right now, when we start to see an influx of JDM supras the prices across the board will drop since the supply will catch up with the demand

The USDM came with bigger brakes and much better turbos (steel vs ceramic) most USDM tt cars were targas fully loadef meanwhile JDM tt cars were mostly coupes with a good amount having cloth seats (some even had recari buckets with that 90s Japanese cloth upholstery)

You are not understanding the problem. It doesn’t matter that it was only one, two, three or however many F&F films it was in. It remains to this day closely associated with that franchise. “But it was only majorly featured in the first one and that was a long time ago!!!” Doesn’t mitigate that at all. GIS ‘Fast and furious cars’ right now, and the 5 of the first 30 images you get will have a JZ80 Supra in it. Demand for that car has been as consistently high as has been the popularity of this franchise, and there is no denying that connection.

the people who actually have the money to buy these aren’t the same people who go see every F&F film

You cannot substantiate this assertion.

The S2000 was featured in those first two movies but you dont see their prices wildly inflated.

I’m guessing you haven’t checked s2k prices lately.

you can buy 67’ chargers all day every day from a whole wide range of price points even though its forever tied to the movies as doms charger.

The Charger is absolutely the wrong car to use if you want to somehow demonstrate that movies have no effect on a car’s value. That era Charger has had the kind of movie and television career a human actor would kill for , and to go along with it, a long history of being the hero car in movies like Vanishing Point, Bullit, Blade, and now F&F.

...but that was a long time ago and no one even remember half of those movies, so a good condition that-era Charger should go for cheap, right? Nope. Again, that’s not a coincidence.

Supras are inflated cause they are in short supply right now, when we start to see an influx of JDM supras the prices across the board will drop since the supply will catch up with the demand

Supra prices are inflated because it was the hero car in a movie franchise. People still closely associate that car with the franchise, so as long as one is popular, the other will be expensive. Importing will not change this, as there is little incentive to import at what will be higher-than-market-value prices beyond getting RHD. People import to get what they can’t have, and we got the same Supra the rest of the world did. Most will not choose this route.

It’s also worth noting how the importing process actually works here; Normally, the product waits for you at the lot. If enough product doesn’t sell, then there is pressure at the dealership to lower the price to move the product.

Importing is not ‘that, but the product is overseas’. There is no lot. There is no dealer chain. There is also no producer making more product for the dealer to sell. You are the one who waits for the product to come to you after you’ve purchased it. See whats wrong with the ‘JDM Supras flooding the market and saving us from inflated prices’ idea yet? Supply meets demand 1:1 in this scenario. Without a glut of unsold Supras waiting at dealers for a price adjustment, there can be no opportunity for a marketwide correction.

Ok well then how do you explain why JDM supra are so cheap when F&F has been a monster box office success world wide and not just here in america? By your logic all supra should be 30-50k which just clearly isn’t the case

The used car market for a 20+yr old car is what it is. Mired in perception like PS9 said. It will stay that way since any new Supra will be over $40,000 if Toyota pays attention to the US purchases of used Supras. Are they any used Supras left that are actually passing hands?

By your logic all supra should be 30-50k which just clearly isn’t the case.

It is the case if you live in the US. The Supra is expensive here for cultural reasons, and F&F has greatly contributed to that. Canada does not have our car culture, so obviously they’re not going to value the same things we do in the same way. A great level of return relative to investment for Universal in Canada on F&F is not an indication that they have the exact same car culture that we do.
